Editorial BoardSamuel Z. Goldhaber, M.D.
Samuel Z. Goldhaber, MD, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, is a Senior Staff Member of the Cardiovascular Medicine Division at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH). He is Director of the BWH Venous Thromboembolism Research Group and serves as Principal Investigator of a broad range of randomized clinical trials and observational studies related to the prevention, treatment, and epidemiology of venous thromboembolism. Dr. Goldhaber has authored more than 400 publications. The March 10, 2005, New England Journal of Medicine published his large clinical trial that described a new method using electronic, computerized alerts to enhance venous thromboembolism prophylaxis. This intervention reduced symptomatic DVT and PE by 41%, without an increase in bleeding complications. In May 2006, he co-chaired the 2-day Surgeon General's Workshop on DVT, cosponsored by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI). He also serves on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and National Quality Forum to formulate new treatment and prevention guidelines for venous thromboembolism. In 2008, the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute appointed him to serve on the Steering Committee of its new multicenter trial: "A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial of Clarification of Optimal Anticoagulation through Genetics." Dr. Goldhaber also serves as Chair of the Steering Committee of the investigator-initiated, NHLBI-sponsored "ATTRACT Trial" comparing catheter directed thrombolysis of massive DVT against conventional therapy. Dr. Goldhaber is President and one of four Founding Directors of the nonprofit North American Thrombosis Forum (www.NATFonline.org). He was also elected as President of the nonprofit Venous Disease Coalition (VDC) (www.venousdiseasecoalition.org). The VDC and Dr. Goldhaber hosted the Surgeon General on September 15, 2008 in Washington, D.C. when the Surgeon General launched The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism. Dr Goldhaber co-directs 2 Harvard Medical School continuing medical education courses: 1) a 5-day course reviewing all aspects of cardiovascular medicine, and 2) a 2-day course reviewing arterial and venous thrombosis and thromboembolism. He also chairs the annual Thrombosis Summit sponsored by the North American Thrombosis Forum (NATF) as well as the Annual Proactive Prevention of Thrombosis Conference, also sponsored by NATF. Dr. Goldhaber is an editorial board member of several academic cardiovascular medicine journals, including Circulation and the American Journal of Cardiology. Dr. Goldhaber has a busy outpatient practice of both general cardiology and venous thromboembolism patients. Dr. Goldhaber receives research support and is a consultant for Aventis, AstraZeneca, and Bristol-Myers Squibb. He is a consultant for Paion, Bayer, Lilly, and Proctor and Gamble.
