Update on Treatment and Prevention of Pulmonary Embolism

Drs. Gregory Piazza and ClotCare editorial board member Dr. Samuel Z. Goldhaber, in the July 18, 2006 issue of Circulation, provide a succinct and authoritative overview of the current status of pulmonary embolism treatment and prevention. A key feature of the article is an algorithm for risk stratifying patients and identifying those in whom thrombolytic therapy or embolectomy may be warranted. The role of inferior vena caval filters is also reviewed. Pharmacologic options and recommendations for initial and ongoing therapy are discussed, as are appropriate preventive measures.
