Scotland: Prevention, investigation and management of venous thromboembolism and antithrombotics: indications and management

Presented by:
Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network
Part of NHS Quality Improvement Scotland

When: September 29, 2009

Developments in the prevention and management of thrombosis have had an impact on the clinical care delivered by healthcare professionals across a wide range of specialties. The associated health gains have been accompanied by increased complexity in the prevention and management of thrombosis. Drafts of updated SIGN guidelines will be presented for discussion at a joint national open meeting on the 29th September, 2009.

The open meeting will be of particular relevance to anaesthetists, cardiologists, dentists, general and specialist physicians, general and specialist surgeons, general practitioners, haematologists, nurses, obstetricians, pharmacists and radiologists.

It will also be of interest to patients and members of the voluntary sector.

SIGN guidelines are developed by multidisciplinary guideline development groups with representation from across Scotland. The guideline recommendations are based on a systematic review of evidence on effective management of the clinical condition concerned and full consultation with healthcare practitioners in all relevant disciplines. The national guidelines are disseminated throughout NHSScotland and are then tailored and implemented according to local circumstances for the benefit of patients.
